Biochar is produced when plant matter, manure, or other organic material is heated in a zero- or low-oxygen environment. Biochar is a charcoal-like material and when it is added to soil, the effect is to remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it underground, where the carbon does not contribute to global warming. Biochar also brings agricultural benefits by boosting soil’s fertility and ability to withstand drought or flooding; it can also rid soil of heavy metals and other pollutants.
