EcoRadio KC is a magazine show, including live segments, prerecorded stories, and interviews. The weekly explores our interdependence with the rest of the world, showing the connections between the ways we choose to live and the health of the whole community of life.
The Missouri River is the longest river in North America. Rising in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana, the Missouri flows east and south for 2,341 miles before entering the Mississippi River north of St. Louis, Missouri. Host Richard Mabion will discuss the Mighty Mo, from the Nebraska/Iowa border to St Louis, with his guests Caroline Pufalt, Sierra Club Grassroots Network Team Activist, Gerald Mestl, who, before his recent retirement, was Missouri River Program Manager with the Nebraska Games and Park Department, and George Cunningham of the Nebraska Chapter of the Sierra Club.
The goal of the Sierra Club’s Missouri River Grassroots Network Team is to promote a healthier MO river, including greater native species diversity and health, better water quality, a more natural floodplain regimen and a more natural connectivity to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. As part of this effort we want to increase appreciation of the Missouri River among area residents and help river communities develop sensible approaches to flood control and development.

Our guests are active in the Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee of the Sierra Club. This committee discusses the implementation of the US Fish and Wildlife Services’ opinion on how to protect the endangered species on the river. The high water level has highlighted the competing interests along the river and why we need to step back and reconsider all the demands we place on the river. We want to raise awareness of how climate change will impact our choices of how to manage the river.
