WE CAN WORK IT OUT

Jaws of Justice host Craig Lubow speaks with Psychologist Robert Barnett about the criminal justice court’s definition of competency as it applies to matters of intent and we all know intent matters in criminal proceedings.  With the overwhelming majority of crimes, defendants must act intentionally – or at least recklessly – in order to be guilty.

Robert Barnett has been self-employed for 30 years as a forensic psychologist. We hope you can listen to their very interesting discussion on how our court system has evolved to put more people in jail.  While those people have been found guilty of criminal behavior, in the cases where there are mental health issues, are WE committing a crime by simply locking them up, or can we do more?

After the calendar, in the second half of our hour, host Margot Patterson will speak with Ryan Sorrell, aka Ryan X, of Black Rainbow and his newest endeavor, Kansas City Defender.  Ryan publicizes news events that are often overlooked by the mainstream media and he asks us why we make excuses or overlook evidence of race discrimination.  His idea is to speak openly about our stereotypes and tropes and to call them out when they occur.  This is how to make social change.

We believe we can do a better job.  Particularly if we examine ourselves for ingrained stereotypes and continue the work toward a fair society.
