Kevin Martin, Dave Pack, and the PeaceWorks Kansas City Annual Meeting March 3.

The public is invited to the annual meeting of PeaceWorks Kansas City March 3 (Sunday) 2-4 PM at Simpson House, 4509 Walnut, Kansas City, MO, 64111. This episode of Radio Active Magazine features an interview with Kevin Martin and Dave Pack.

Kevin is President of Peace Action, which was founded in 1957 as SANE, the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy. Dave is treasurer of PeaceWorks, which is the Kansas City Affiliate of Peace Action. PeaceWorks was founded in 1982 as part of the Kansas City Nuclear Freeze Coalition, which was part of the national FREEZE campaign. The national FREEZE campaign and SANE merged in 1987 and adopted the name “Peace Action” in 1993. PeaceWorks advocates nonviolent direct action to counter two existential threats that could end life on Earth as we know it: environmental degradation and nuclear weapons.

NOTE: A 4:09 m:ss video of a simulated nuclear war between the US and Russia is available via the Wikipedia article on “Nuclear Winter” and the Wikiversity article on “Responding to a nuclear attack“. This cites a 2022 study that concluded that 99 percent of the humans in the US, Europe, Russia and China would starve to death within a few years after such a war if they did not die of something else sooner. Eighty percent of humans worldwide would similarly die and 95 percent of the fatalities would be in countries not involved in the nuclear exchange. Worse, the probability of a nuclear war is not negligible and is increasing over time, consistent with the documentation of “system accidents“, which notes that expert intuition is learned from frequent, rapid, high quality feedback, which is absent from infrequent events like nuclear wars. Political and military leaders are selected on their ability to please the people who control most of the money for the media, which makes their actions increasingly dangerous as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki become further removed in history, as discussed in the Wikiversity article on “Expertise of military leaders and national security experts“.
