The Team
Una Nowling lived a turbulent life where she tried to do her best, but failed despite all her efforts. Her epitaph is "Never have I been a blue calm sea / I have always been a storm."
Fiona Nowling is one of the producers of the Tenth Voice, which airs every Saturday. She also coproduces the program Every Woman, also airing on Saturday. In August 2018 they were elected to the KKFI Board of Directors for a 3-year term. In December 2019 she was elected to be President of the Board of Directors of KKFI, and in August 2020 they were reelected to the Board, and elected as Secretary of the Board of Directors of KKFI. Outside of KKFI, she runs a support group called SOFFA, works in the IT Field in Healthcare, and enjoys anime and reading in what remains of their spare time. Pronouns are she/they.

My guest today is Rita Smith. Rita is the Senior Adviser for the National Football League on their efforts to end violence against women, and is Executive Vice President of External Relations for domesticshelters.org.
We will dive into the big conversations about the normalization of violence in culture including images, music, verbiage, and "othering" as a means to issue power and control over historically marginalized people. I can't wait to dive into this conversation, as Rita believes that advocacy and social change are intricately connected and cannot be done separately. This perspective is the exact roadmap we are taking at Safe In Harm’s Way to offer safety and healing solutions for survivors of violence, the people who love them, and the communities where they live.

Join us this week for What's Cooking with Shelia Johnson as she welcomes another awesome guest to the studio! Today her guest is Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw. She represents the 5th City Council District of Kansas City. She began serving her first term in August 2019. She has lived in the 5th district with her family for over 23 years.
Mayor Quinton Lucas appointed Ryana as Mayor Pro Tem of Kansas City in August 2023.
She also serves as the Chair of the Neighborhood Planning and Development Committee, Chair of the Land Bank Commission, and Vice Chair of the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Commission. She previously served as the Chair of the Mayor’s Houseless Task Force, and Co-Chair of the Health Commission. She is also a member of the Kansas City Economic Development Board, Zoo Board, KC Shepherd Center Board and the Starlight Board of Directors.
Mrs. Parks-Shaw is a long-time healthcare executive. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri State University and a Master of Science degree from Southwest Baptist University. She is an alumnus of Ruskin High School in the Hickman Mills School District. Motivated by her membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, she has a deep passion for community service and improving the quality of life for Kansas City residents.

Lauren began her career in operational management roles working for large corporations in her hometown of Saint Louis, MO. It was in these roles that she experienced a first taste of the inequities women frequently experience in the workplace.
Today, Lauren Conaway serves as an advocate for women as the founder and CEO of InnovateHER KC, a leadership community that serves diverse women and individuals from marginalized gender groups. Through InnovateHER KC, and as co-host of the Startup Hustle Podcast, Lauren makes it her mission to amplify, elevate and celebrate badass women doing kickass things in Kansas City, facilitating space for leadership development, a supportive network, resource sharing and mentorship for members.
